Where the School Meets the Soil
Pothar and pedagogy; a library and seeds; schools and farming; seuj sinta and seeds.
Can these components live together? Can researchers learn from a farmer? The
world of present knowledge tells us that such bed fellows cannot co-exist. Farming
is associated with tradition and poverty so the school should turn the student into a
modern citizen, away from the farm. The researcher produces knowledge and gives
it to the ‘ignorant’ farmer. The authors of this book ask the same questions but find
the opposite answers. ‘Whose wisdom?’ they ask. Should the farmer’s children be
‘weaned away’ from agriculture in the name of development? Should a library be
filled with books alone?

This patchwork project works so well it should be considered for other attempts to capture the diversity of food systems in different parts of India. Food is at the core of this. Eating food from the region as part of one’s desire to try out the exotic will not break the stereotypes associated with it. Food is political, and this volume encapsulates and shows us the social and political nature of food and how the simple act of cooking and eating can be a form of resistance….
